 Who are we?

Utah G.A.R.D.E.N.S. Inc. is a local, all volunteer, non-profit community gardening organization. We are trying to build many more community gardens.

What is P.L.A.Y.?

P.L.A.Y. is our youth component which grows food for the needy.

Volunteer teens across the valley come together all season long to grow for those in need. They grow food on at least three gardens in the valley. They are in South Salt Lake, Murray and South Jordan. Each garden is about ¾ of an acre. The food is donated to the Utah Food Bank, the LDS Church, other local food pantries and area refugee families locating to the United States.

It is also a partnership with the Salt Lake County 4H program.

How much time is needed?

That depends on what level of involvement you want. Leaders plan 2-5 hours a week

Is there hard work?

Absolutely! Make no mistake, it can be hard at times. But it is also a blast. And at the end of the season, when you get to deliver the food personally to the families who need it, it makes it all worthwhile. If it was not, we would not have so many people coming back every year.

What can I expect to learn?

Teamwork. Leadership development. Management skills. How to make a change in people’s lives. And oh yeah…gardening and nutrition.

Can I use this on job and scholarship applications?

Be a Leader

We are always looking for teens who would like to be a positive change in the community.

This program does demand a lot of commitment. It is youth run. That means the teens make all decisions about the garden. They plan which crops to grow, plant, maintain during the summer, do media interviews, work with local government leaders, manage large work groups, harvest food and donate to those they feel appropriate.

This requires generally 2-5 hours a week from now through October. Of course there are exceptions for final exams and vacations etc.

Bring a group

We are very accommodating to large youth groups such as churches, scout troops and school clubs.

This is a great way to celebrate Global Youth Service Day.

GYSD is the largest day of youth community service in the country. And the movement is rising.

We would also love to have groups during the summer as well.

We have yet to tell a group that they are too big for us to handle.

So who do I call?

That depends on which garden you want to help with.
